Beware of Rip Currents during low season. No lifeguards are watching !!! Rip currents occur with strong winds and waves. Where water comes to the beach, there is always a part where water goes out in a stream. Happened at Sokha and Ochheuteal that people died or almost drowned that way. When caught in a rip, swim not against it. Swim along parallel the beach and get out of it that way ! As soon you have no stand anymore you got no chance to fight against it as the current is usually faster than you can swim. Most endangered are mothers swimming with their chiidren. As soon they get in a rip, they try to keep their children over water and usually swim against the rip until they all drown. When you see strong waves you better be aware of this could happen and what you should do when caught in a rip
Cambodia\\\'s touristic beaches are mainly in Sihanoukville ( 8 beaches ) and it\\\'s offshore islands. Some of the best beaches in Cambodia are at Koh Rong Samloem on the inner side as Saracen, which is in the meantime developed with 7 bungalow resorts, mostly owned by germans. Another beaches on the inner side of Koh Rong Samloem are not developed and on one beach development is in progress by the same owner which made Sok San Bungalows in Koh Rong. On the outer sunset front of Koh Rong Samloem there are just smaller beaches developed with 1 resort each. Saracen bay now has several tourboats going over as freedom, suntours, partyboat and others. Most known backpacker haven beach in Cambodia is White Sand at the inner side of Koh Rong. The ultimate countries dream beach is the few developed 6km stretch of Sok San Bay on the outer side of Koh Rong with clearwater snorkeling. Being on the inner islands means a water visibility of 5-10 meters, being on the outer side of the outer islands Rong, Samloem, Koung means a visibility of 15-30 meters. Diving in Koh Tang and Prins is the underwater dream but hard to reach. Waves on the inner side are up to 2 meters but from 2 meters on the outer side of Koh Rong and Samloem. The best, still funky beach in Sihanoukville is Otres but not yet got a nightlife. The crowded beach in SHV is Ochheuteal with it\\\'s Serendipity part on the right. Beware of all sort of hassles and thiefs at Ochheuteal. For those like it more relaxt it\\\'s Independence beach. Russian Victory beach is down in 2015 and Polonsky still struggles with Doroshenko about rights.
April is the hottest month. Drink enough fluids and don\\\'t burn on beaches for ages. Beware of you won\\\'t reamrk heating up. But when it happens it\\\'s very unconvenient to be on an island as there is no medical care and the next boat back let\\\'s you wait for hours or even overnight. A heat stroke is live threatening !! When being on an island, cool a person as quick as possible with a shower, support enough fluids and organize a transport as quick as possible back to SHV CT clinic. The problem on islands is you got nothing to really cool, electricity is usually shut down daytime, not even a fan is working and water from your shower is anything other than cold. Organize ice, to cool a affected person as quick as possible down from more than 40 degrees to 38. Beware of you won\\\'t usually even have an internet connection on an island and when it happens....time is precious...every second counts. To prevent it, drink as much as possible and don\\\'t be silly sunbather in April !
Koh Rong got developed around the village, which is laid on the inner side as well. This beach is now developed with several resorts originally started by the diveshop which moved his dive base in 2008 from Koh Rong Samloem to another bigger island. Later other resorts followed> Most people are going to this beach, where the younger crowd is getting good fun and parties at nights. Most tourboats to this inner Koh Rong beach leave at Sihanoukville from the Royal Pier behind the port. The Koh Rong booking office is next to the golden lion circle, but several other offices are existing. Almost every single island resort has it\'s own booking office and leaves from another pier in city, what makes it a bit confusing probably for most visitors to find the right office and finally the right pier.
Now let\'s talk about the ultimate beach in Cambodia. When we are talking about beaches laid on the inner side of islands we are talking about water depth of 15m as well. And with a couple waves this is whirling up smaller particles, what makes the diving and snorkeling fun quite low. If you are the divers freak or like snorkeling right in front of your resort, the you have no other option than going to one of the outer beaches of Koh Rong Samloem or Koh Rong. And then we come soo to the beach, which is the absolute ultimate beach. Probably one of the ultimate beaches in the whole world. Sok San Bay. A 6km white sandy stretch as Saracen Bay, but with the difference that you got crystal clear water for snorkeling. In the meantime, there are 2 resorts at this beach but it will last a bit more and there will be a couple more.
The most secluded developed beach on a Cambodian island is \'Lonely Beach\' at the northern part of Koh Rong. Dany, one of the most experienced westerner living in country made his first bungalow resort initially at M\'Pay Bay ages ago. It was the first ever built bungalow resort on a Cambodian island. In 2011 he opened lonely beach bungalows.
Koh Rong is the ultimate dream island and there are plenty more ultimate beaches on the inner side. Undevelopped and pure nature. Most of the Cambodian islands are pure nature with just a handful pretty romantic bungalow resorts right on the beach and you won\'t find any street on a Cambodian island. It\'s absolutely unique in the world beside of Indonesia, but in 2007 there was a sold out of land and islands and all islands are sold to those investors will bring you up once in 10 years your Gucci shops and MC Donalds frenchises and build probably as everywhere else first a 4 lane highway right behind the dream beaches. But for the next 5-10 years until the big boys with too much money and plenty of lousy ideas will come, the beaches are still here and developped by people putting their heartblood into their resorts. Once the moment will come, where the big boys caterpillars will flatten it all down as it happened with plenty of places at Sihanoukville\'s Otres beach in 2010, but you got time left, to see real untouched islands and you can choose your dream beach. You got at least 5 years until MC Donalds frenchiser find out it need another crap right on the best beach.
You got the best beach and trying to enjoy it....but....there is something anoying. Those guys often come from behind sticking with you and before you really know what happened it\'s itching like hell for days. All you can do is staying a bit back from the beach or if shallow waters walking as far outside as possible and dive, if one hooked up with you. Amazingly there are beaches having sandflies, another ones don\'t and we have to reasearch a bit more where this mess is coming from and chooses just the best beaches. Seems as those guys have a good taste :-) The sandflies beaches are: Otres, Sok San, Saracen, White Sand
That\'s the point to blame fishermen. They just throw all over board, what they not really need. There are beaches where you can collect all this stuff, started from medical needles and whatever and you could open a store with it. Some of the hotel owners in Sihanoukville shared together and started to cleam up Ochheuteal. Same the bungalow resort owners at Saracen are collecting hundreds of kilos daily to keep those beaches somehow clean, but with next waves and overnight, it starts again and it\'s impossible to get it fixed as long those several hundred fisherboats are filling up the sea with tons of plastic and whatever. The director of evironment is a young guy would probably not care to much about, more busy as well to fill his pockets in any ways and making big shows with his middle rank police friends and as long probably this guy not starts to make his job, the owners of all beach resorts and as well tourists will have to live with it that some of the beaches are garbige collections.
